WHO calls for crisis meeting after the emergence of the “Now” COVID variant

The World Health Organization has called for an emergency meeting with researchers who are concerned about a new COVID variant that has emerged from South Africa.

The new B.1.1.529 strain is said to be even more contagious than the Delta variant with Professor Tulio de Oliveira, head of the Center for Epidemic Response and Innovation in South Africa, describing it as an “unusual constellation of mutations”.

The United Kingdom has already imposed travel bans on six African countries.

To date, 53 cases have been discovered in South Africa, the reported origin of this strain with three more cases in Botswana and Hong Kong respectively.
