More than a year after a construction worker was struck and killed on DuSable Lake Shore Drive, police have charged a Grand Crossing woman with hitting him and failing to report the accident that caused his death.
Kenneth Hernandez was standing in a construction zone near Belmont Harbor late at night in April 2023 when a black sedan hit him and sped off, authorities said at the time.
Bahiyyah Bost, 50, now faces felony charges of failure to report a fatal accident and reckless homicide in a construction zone, according to court records.
Shortly after she allegedly struck 45-year-old Hernandez, Bost was involved in another crash with another driver, police said. She then fled the scene of the second accident with a rolled-up windshield and ran a red light at the intersection of Pratt Boulevard and Sheridan Road, nearly hitting three people in the crosswalk.
Police said Bost turned himself in Thursday. Documents show Hernandez’s survivors filed a personal injury lawsuit against Bost and the city of Chicago in October 2023. That case is set for a hearing on Sept. 18.
Attorneys representing Bost and Hernandez’s survivors did not immediately return requests for comment.
Cook County Judge William Fahy ordered Bost released on electronic monitoring at a detention hearing Friday morning, court records show. She is next scheduled to appear in court on September 18.
