Although the woman was not identified, she was a member of the public and not an airport worker, according to a Department of Labor spokesperson.
Emergency crews were called to Terminal 5 at about 7:45 a.m. Thursday after reports of a woman “trapped in machinery,” fire officials said.
When they arrived at the scene, they found the woman “entangled in the conveyor belt system used to move luggage,” officials said.
Doctors declared the woman dead at the scene.
The area has been declared a crime scene, and the Chicago Police Department is investigating.
